I love to travel whenever I am able to do so. Traveling has been fun at times and at others not so much. Ever cringe at fellow traveler’s faux pas especially when you are on a long haul flight? In this blog post, “Travel mistakes: Mind your manners when flying” I share some travel etiquette pet peeves faux pas to prevent you from being an inconsiderate passenger.

Travel mistakes: Mind your manners when flying

Traveling offers numerous advantages, encompassing not just physical well-being but also mental health benefits. However, it also entails certain responsibilities. To guarantee a seamless travel experience for oneself and fellow passengers, it’s imperative for everyone to uphold proper manners while flying regarding:

  • Seat reclining
  • Loud travelers
  • Board according to instructions
  • screaming children
  • Overhead bin storage Dominance
  • Tray table
  • Taking the seat of someone else

Seat reclining

Unearth the top travel etiquette pet peeves faux pas. I still remember years later my return flight from South Africa to Paris. The two gentlemen that were seated in front of us kept their seat reclined during the 11+hour flight and we only had a break when it was diner, breakfast and snack time. We chose to say anything because we did not want to argue with these gentlemen so we took upon us to be uncomforatble for them to be comfortable to keep peace on board.

On thing that a lot of people seem to forget is that you reap all the negative unkind, disrecpectful actions that you put out there at one point in life.

Loud Travelers

Have you guys heard about that woman’s story that went viral because she wanted to sing on a plane? Despite repetitive requests from the head flight attendant on board to remain seated and to not sing, she still wanted to sing. You can read the full story here. If you wish to engage in conversation, it’s important to respect the personal space of fellow passengers by speaking in a moderate tone. Similarly, when listening to music, please remember to use headphones and adjust the volume to a level that does not disrupt others.

Board according to instructions

Do not be that annoying passenger that think that boarding intstructions do not apply to him/her. When boarding, join your assigned line and wait patiently until your group is called. Boarding is processed in order with the first class passengers first, business second and lastly economy. This rule applies for domestic as well as long haul flights.

Screaming children

While it’s understandable that children may become restless or uncomfortable during air travel, prolonged and disruptive outbursts can significantly detract from the overall experience for everyone onboard. The incessant noise can be particularly bothersome for those attempting to rest or concentrate during the journey. Consequently, because of this situation, one airline announced that it is introducing child-free zones on one of its routes. You can read the full story here. Let me know in the comment what are your thoughts on this announcement.

Overhead bin storage dominance

Have you ever found yourself on a plane, unable to locate an available overhead storage bin for your carry-on bag? I’ve been in that situation, and I can attest that it’s far from amusing. It entails traversing the aisle repeatedly in search of a vacant spot, a scenario which is both inconvenient and frustrating. It’s a matter of common courtesy to utilize only a reasonable portion of the overhead storage space, leaving ample room for fellow passengers. By adhering to this principle and packing light, you can circumvent encroaching on or impinging upon others’ space.

Tray table

Tray tables serve a specific purpose and should not be utilized for activities such as changing children. Observing proper travel etiquette entails employing tray tables for their intended function. When it becomes necessary to attend to an infant’s needs, it is advisable to utilize the designated restroom facilities within one’s respective section.

Taking the seat of someone else

While it may not require expertise in etiquette, it’s evident that usurping someone’s seat and behaving as if it’s inconsequential is inherently rude. If you purchased a seat in the middle, ailse or window stick to it.

Survival tips for dealing with travel etiquette pet peeves faux pas

  • Master the art of patience because you will need it
  • Pack noise-canceling head phones
  • Treat people the way that you would like to be treated

Conclusion

I hope that this post on “travel mistakes: mind your manners when flying” will help you follow the proper etiquette when traveling and how to handle them. Despite of some of these incidents that I have encountered, I am still traveling because traveling for me is a form of therapy.
