Before to discover the beautiful city of Philadelphia, here’s a few things that you need to know. It is the biggest city of the state of Pennsylvania located on the East coast of the United States. It is a city with a population of over 1 million people. Philadelphia is known as the “Birthplace of America.” It played a crucial role in the American Revolution. It is home to Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and adopted.

Moreover, the Liberty Bell, an enduring symbol of American freedom, is also located in Philadelphia; it is renowned for its distinctive crack and profound historical significance.

Another key fact about Philadelphia is that it boasts a vibrant cultural scene with numerous museums, theaters, and music venues. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, known for its extensive collection and the “Rocky Steps,” is a notable landmark for those that I have seen the movie with Sylvester Stallone.

How to go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from New York City

Two days after our arrival in NYC, we took a Greyhound/Flixbus bus in midtown, Manhattan at 31st street and 8th avenue. The ride lasted about 2 hours. We arrived in downtown Philadelphia then took a Uber this time around to get to our hotel.

Where to stay in Philadelphia for 24 hours

Stay at the Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square. It is a luxury hotel located in the heart of Rittenhouse Square. As Parisians and considering the fact that we do not drive, we chose a hotel in the city center.

Find below some key facts and information about this area of Philadelphia:

  • Rittenhouse Square is one of the most sought-after residential areas due to its luxurious residential buildings, including historic brownstones and modern high-rises. It’s one of the most sought-after residential areas in Philadelphia. It offers a mix of old charm and contemporary living.
  • Rittenhouse Square boasts an array of high-end shops, boutiques, and restaurants.
  • The area has multiple public transportation options, including buses and subway lines. Its central location makes it a convenient base for non drivers.

Where to eat in Philadelphia

Short on time, we mainly focused on places to eat. I booked a table at one of the popular destinations in town for seven people. Five of our friends that live in the area joined us for dinner, DJ sets and drinks. When in Philadelphia, please check out Morgan’s Piers.

Morgan’s Pier is one of the city’s most popular summer hotspots, offering an outdoor seating deck with stunning views of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and Delaware River. Fortunately for us during our stay in Philadelphia in May, 2024, Morgan’s Pier was reopening for the estival season. It has the perfect backdrop to spend an evening with friends. Kindly note if you are from Europe or elsewhere that you need to be 21+ and have a valid ID to get in.

Where to have breakfast and brunch

Green Eggs Café

For breakfast, I highly recommend Green Eggs Café in Rittenhouse Square. This café is a popular destination so get there early if you want to get a table. Customers also have the option of taking their food to go. One particularity about this place and that it only accepts cash. There is a ATM machine right inside the café. Nonetheless, just in case, it might have a malfunction, bring some cash. In addition, for orders over $50, there is no split check.

I was there on a Saturday morning around 9 am and let me tell you that the place was starting to fill up fast. I was fortunate to arrive early enough to not find a line at the door. However, by the time, I left, the line had already formed outside. Get there early especially on weekends.

One thing, I really like about this place is that it was just a short walking distance from our hotel. No need to Uber or to take public transportation.

Where to get drinks in the evening in Philadelphia

For drinks, head over to the Liberty Lounge of the Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square. The lounge serves hand-crafted cocktails in an urban chic setting. Fortunately for us, the lounge had just reopened after renovation; we were among the first ones to enjoy it. We chose to seat in the cozy lounge alongside the working fireplace but you can seat in the stylish dining area to sip cocktails.
