Have you ever dreamed of moving to Paris but wonder about the cost of living there. Today, I will talk about the cost for renting an apartment. Here is what you need to know.
It all depends of these factors:
The neighborhood
The size of the apartment
Will it be on the ground floor or top floors? Apartments located on the ground floor are cheaper than those higher up.
Will it be furnished or unfurnished?
Will you be alone or with roommates?
Will you use an agency or not?
Will you get it through word of mouth, an employer or school? Will it be on your own? By that I mean you finding the apartment dealing and negotiating with the landlord without any intermediaries.
Last, but not least, your budget alone or with roommates.
Keep in mind that apartments located North Est (18,19 and parts of the 10th district) are less expensive than those located West, on the rive gauche, rive droite and central Paris.
To give you an idea here is a little breakdown of the arrondissements. For more on them click here.

When renting an apartment through an agency or a landlord, you might be asked to make three times the cost of the monthly apartment cost. E.g. If the apartment costs 1000 euros including utilities or not, you have to make 3000 euros or more per month if you are alone. If not, you will have to find roommates with a combined income of 3000 euros or more. If you don’t plan on having roommates, someone such as your parents or a friend can back you up financially.
There are a couple of websites that you can visit to find an landlord. They put you directly in contact with them eliminating agencies’s fees. Some of the most popular ones are:
Keep in mind that you always have to be cautious when searching and visiting an apartment. If it is too good to be true it is because it is too good to be true. To prevent any issues use a legitimate real estate agency. These are reputable ones. You can find one of their agencies everywhere in Paris.
The Cost of living in Paris will depend on how well your plan. In the long-run, great planning will save you money. Do your research thoroughly. If there are any additional info that you would like to get, feel free to let me know in the comment section.
