8 Affordable Fall Getaways from Paris by Train

Autumn is one of my favorite seasons in Paris but also to travel to discover new French and European cities. Paris during the fall season is undeniably beautiful, but sometimes a quick escape from the city can be refreshing especially when it is budget friendly.

France and its neighboring countries offer plenty of affordable fall getaways that are easily accessible from Paris by train. Whether you are looking to discover the colorful charm of small French cities or the scenic beauty of countryside landscapes, you are in for a treat.

These eight destinations provide the perfect opportunity to experience the best of fall without breaking the bank. Hop on a train from Paris and discover picturesque sceneries all within a few hours train ride.

Lille

Just an hour away from Paris, the city of Lille stands for its charming streets lined with cozy cafés and bistros, perfect for enjoying a warm drink while soaking in the crisp fall air. In addition, the city historic sites like the Old Town and Palais des Beaux-Arts which are big attractions attract less tourists in the fall.

Furthermore, Lille hosts the famous Braderie de Lille, Europe’s largest flea market, where you can browse antiques and enjoy local delicacies in a festive atmosphere. During that time, millions of visitors flock to the city to buy all kind of objects and vintage clothes.

Lyon

Lyon stands out for its rich history, culinary excellence, and vibrant cultural scene. Just 2 hours away from Paris, this city is one of my favorite French cities to visit. Lyon is the “Gastronomic Capital of France,”It is also is famous for its bouchons (traditional tiny restaurants). The city is also known for hearty dishes such as quenelles, saucisson, and coq au vin.

Beside being known for its gastonomic offerings, Lyon also boasts several important cultural institutions. The Musée des Beaux-Arts, one of the largest fine art museums in France is a must visit. Lyon also boasts a thriving theater and opera scene. With its combination of history, culture, and world-renowned cuisine, Lyon is the perfect fall getaway in France.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux is world-famous for its wine, historic architecture, and vibrant cultural scene. The city stands our for various reasons:

  • Wine Capital of the World,” Bordeaux is synonymous with some of the finest wines globally. The city is surrounded by legendary vineyards like Médoc, Saint-Émilion, and Pomerol, producing top-tier red wines.
  • Its beauty. Bordeaux boasts stunning waterfront views and beautiful architecture. The Miroir d’Eau (Water Mirror) in front of Place de la Bourse is a major attraction, reflecting the city’s historic buildings in a shallow pool of water.
  • Cultural Scene: Bordeaux is a vibrant cultural hub, featuring a variety of museums, galleries, and theaters.

If you would like to do some shopping, rue Sainte Catherine is Bordeaux’s main shopping street. This pedestrian street is the longest shopping street in Europe where most shops are located.

Nancy Ville

Nancy Ville may not be as well-known as the other cities mentionned above, however, it still has a lot to offer. Just 1 hour and 39 minutes away from Paris, the city boasts a rich Renaissance past. Its three Renaissance squares, Place Stanislas, Place de la Carrière and Place d’Alliance, are all UNESCO World Heritage Sites that tourists can visit. In addition, Nancy Ville stands out for its:

  • Vibrant universities life. It is home to several universities, including Université de Lorraine, giving the city a lively and youthful atmosphere.
  • A thriving art and cultural scene.
  • Stunning Art Nouveau Architecture often referred as the capital of Art Nouveau.

Dieppe, Normandy

This city never ceases to impress me, I just love it. Located 2 hours away from Paris, this maritime city is France’s leading fishing port for scallops. It is a lively and dynamic city of art and history. The city stands out because of:

  • Its location, it is a seaside destination
  • Its local dish, la marmite dieppoise. It is made of a bouillabaisse of fish and shellfish with extra crème fraîche.

Deauville

Located just 2h30 min from Paris, Deauville is located in the Calavados department in the Normandy region. Its area is about 3.57 km2 and its population is less than 4000 and increases during the summer season. Deauville has been a seaside destination since the 1800s for wealthy and upper class Parisians and suburbians. It is known for:

  • Its expensive historical and beautiful estates.
  • Golf course.
  • Film festival.

Colmar

Colmar is a city of art and history. The town boasts a rich architectural heritage, including an ancient collegiate church, several convents, a remarkable theater, canals (Little Venice). Colmar stands out for its

  • Well preserves beautiful/colorful medieval houses.
  • Cultural heritage. Colmar is the birthplace of the sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, the creator of the Statue of Liberty.
  • Vineyards that produce world-renowned white wines, particularly Riesling and Gewürztraminer. The town offers numerous wine cellars and tasting opportunities.
  • Holiday Market.

Brussels

Couldn’t conlude this post without my 8th and last affordable fall getaways accessible by train, Brussels. Located 1 hour and 30 min, this vibrant city stands out for these reasons:

  • As the capital of the European Union. It hosts major EU institutions, including the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the Council of the European Union.
  • The grand Place located in the heart of Brussels which is considered one of the most beautiful squares in the world.
  • Gastronomy. I am pretty sure that you have heard of the Belgian waffles
  • Chocolate
  • Beer
  • Fries
  • Art Nouveau architecture
  • Museums such as the Magritte Museum
